The week might have been shorter because of the end of May holiday in the United States and across Europe, but there was still plenty of travel tech news out there.

A piece focusing on whether points-based hotel loyalty programs are dead, was the most popular read this week. The need for programs to evolve or become irrelevant is clear, and hoteliers seem well aware of the balancing act required to cater for the demands of younger demographics and older cohorts.

PhocusWire also covered the latest installment in a Phocuswright trend series on artificial intelligence (AI). News editor Abby Crotty summarized the discussion
on the impact of generative AI on travel distribution.

The panel of executives from companies such as Accor, Bonafide and Kayak delved into issues such as trust, personalization and the likelihood of large tech companies going deeper in travel through AI.

We also put a spotlight on Alex Mans, CEO of Flyr, in an interview this week. He discussed the current state of airline retailing, Flyr's investment priorities and challenges both the hotel and airline industries are facing.

Our final lead story was written in response to an article published last week on potential future scenarios for agentic AI in travel. Bob Matsuoka, a fractional chief technology officer and former product engineering boss at Tripadvisor, argues for building AI in communities and social platforms. This is where travelers increasingly go for inspiration, and the technology infrastructure can handle the complexity.
