And staffing shortages among TSA agents are causing longer wait times for security screenings at U.S. airports.

The war with Iran could cost U.S. airlines as much as $24 billion in additional jet fuel expenses, according to a new analysis by Skift Research.

  • It's a staggering increase given that the entire U.S. airline sector earned just $13.5 billion in operating profits for 2025.

  • Airlines would have to raise airfares by, on average, 11% to cover the incremental fuel bill.

        • The lengthy wait times come as TSA agents missed their first paycheck due to the partial government shutdown.
        • Airlines for America president Chris Sununu warned that the shutdown could complicate spring break travel.
        • DHS also suspended Global Entry, a program that offers travelers an expedited screening process at customs.
